"The Molecular Bases of Eye Diseases training program at Harvard Medical School provides access to incredible facilities and faculty that rival any in the world."

MHC Class Ib molecules and ocular immune privilege

MHC class Ib molecules are a subset of the MHC Class I molecules that display several unique properties that distinguish them from the "classical" MHC Class I molecules. Multiple studies have shown them to have inhibitory effects on NK cells, T cells, and macrophages. A few studies have shown that some of these MHC Class I molecules are indeed expressed in the eye, despite their globally limited distribution. The aim of this project is to determine the expression of cell-associated and soluble class Ib molecules on cells and tissues of ocular anterior segment and aqueous humor, and then examine their effects on immune effector cells.
