Trainees are requested to form a plan of didactic study by selecting from the following offerings. Those items marked with a star (*) are required.

Courses:

*The Molecular Bases of Diseases
Taught by leading Harvard faculty, both basic scientists and clinicians, to provide a broad knowledge of ophthalmic diseases, and the structure, function, and development of the ocular systems in which they occur. (Participating Harvard Faculty, Fall)

*Principles of Grant Writing
This special two-session course tutors the trainees in preparing National Research Service Award (NRSA) applications. (Patricia D'Amore and Meredith Gregory-Ksander; given periodically)

*Responsible Conduct of Research
A three session class which is intended to foster in postdoctoral fellows a greater appreciation of the growing complexities of maintaining the highest level of ethical practice in the pursuit of research. The program is case study based and will be taught and facilitated by faculty from BWH, MGH and Schepens. (Schepens Eye Research Institute, May and October)

*Special Ophthalmology Grand Rounds
The Grand Rounds surveys outstanding clinical problems in vision from the medical perspective. (Leading Ophthalmology Clinical Faculty; Sept.- June, Monthly, Meltzer Auditorium, MEEI).

The MEEI Vision Ophthalmology Seminar Series
Leading national and international research guests present their work on topics related to visual sciences. (Monthly, Fridays, Sloane Teaching Room, MEEI).

The SERIes Seminars
Presentations by faculty at the Schepens Eye Research Institute on various topics of molecular research. (Schepens Eye Research Institute).

The Fellows' Seminars
The Training Committee at SERI sponsors a seminar series featuring the postdoctoral fellows (Schepens Eye Research Institute).

The Distinguished Lecture Series
Distinguished faculty and research invitees present their work on topics related to visual sciences. (Monthly, Starr Center, Schepens Eye Research Institute).

The Harvard Ophthalmology Retreat
The Harvard Ophthalmology Retreat is a yearly event sponsored by a different program every year. It features invited talks by members of the department, a keynote address by an outside speaker, and a poster session.
